This verse introduces the general character of a believer’s prayer life: 1) “all prayer and petition” focuses on the variety; 2) “at all times” focuses on the frequency (cf. Ro 12:12; Php 4:6; 1Th 5:17); 3) “in the Spirit” focuses on submission, as we line up with the will of God (cf. Ro 8:26, 27); 4) “be on the alert” focuses on the manner (cf. Mt 26:41; Mk 13:33); 5) “all perseverance” focuses on the persistence (cf. Lk 11:9; 18:7, 8); and 6) “all the saints” focuses on the objects (cf. 1Sa 12:23).

May our light shine bright, for the world to see. May that light, not point to us for our perfection, but to Jesus, who was perfect in every way. The God/Man who came to give us this light and life.

This never gets olds, hearing that I can’t earn salvation. The Law cannot save me and when I strive to earn it I am never good enough, but through Jesus, I am made whole, by his gift, that he has freely given, to all who receive it. What a terrible burden, that I am free from the yoke of the Law.

Glory of the Lord revealed

A prophetic exhortation told Israel to prepare for the revelation of the Lord’s glory at the arrival of Messiah. Scripture sees John the Baptist in this role (Mt 3:3; Mk 1:3; Lk 3:4–6; Jn 1:23). It likewise sees the future forerunner who is to be like Elijah preparing for Christ’s second coming (Mal 3:1; 4:5, 6).

Call upon the name of the Lord, for He will not disappoint! His Love endures forever. He gives Life to those who Humble themselves before him. His Love never fails. Nothing can separate us from the Love of God.
